Solve Problems vs. Argue the Problems in Your Relationship

with Kelly Gorsky, LMHC, CCP, CAMS-I

You are not just arguing about the issue.
You are arguing about how you argue about the issue.
And every time, it ends the same way. Frustration. Silence. Blame.

You want resolution.
But what you keep getting is resistance. Shutdown. Or a shouting match.

This is where the work begins.

In couples counseling, the goal is not to go over the fight again and again. It is to change the patterns underneath. The communication breakdowns. The emotional roadblocks. The mental patterns that keep you stuck in the same cycle.

Arguing is Not the Problem. Staying Stuck Is.

In Marriage and Couples Counseling, I offer insight and tools to help couples shift from arguing the problem to solving it.

The approach is not to ignore the conflict or avoid and sweep issues under the rug.
It means building skills to compromise and resolve.

You will become informed as to properly identify issues without triggering defensiveness or avoidance and shutdowns.
You will attain knowledge to become present without getting pulled into old emotional loops.
You will clearly attain clarity between expressing yourself and attacking your partner.
And you will gain tools to communicate clearly, stay calm, and actually resolve the issue.

This is not passive work. This is an active skill-building approach that you can apply immediately.

What Problem-Solving Looks Like in My Office

I work with couples who are ready for structure, focus, and results.
My sessions are practical. My feedback is direct. You will not waste time.

We focus on:

  • Identifying your recurring argument patterns and changing them
  • Using language that keeps the conversation open and productive
  • Knowing when to pause so the message is not lost in emotion
  • Reading your partner’s tone, body language, and disengagement cues
  • Creating space to both listen and be heard, as well as acknowledged

Resolving issues means acquiring skills to become emotionally connected, even when you disagree.

What I Don’t Do

I am not here to referee a fight.
I do not take sides. I do not let one person take over the session.
I do not let emotion derail the process.

If you are looking for someone to just listen while you vent, I may not be the right fit.
If you are ready to do the work it takes to assertively communicate and solve real issues, this is where we start.
